eDNA

Between 2023 and 2025 Living Landscapes undertook a comprehensive eDNA survey with catchment groups we work with.

eDNA measures of the life supporting capacity of water, or the cumulative impact of:

  • What is happening now (e.g. nutrients, sediment, stock access);

  • Past changes (e.g. land drainage or removal of native forest), and;

  • Actions of nature (e.g. weed invasion or low flows).

eDNA helps determine priorities and benchmark changes over time. It can also detect rare or valued species such as tuna (longfin eel), kanakana (lamprey), koura (freshwater crayfish), or freshwater mussels.
